Carer Emergency Support

This free-of-charge service is available to all Adult Carers and Young Carers of adults and may be of benefit to you in an emergency situation.

What would happen to the person you care for if:

  • You had an accident, became ill or had an emotional crisis?
  • You had to take care of a family crisis?
  • You had to attend an exam or job interview at short notice?

Don't worry! You could access free replacement care in situations just like these.

The Carers' Emergency Support Service (County Durham and Darlington) ensures that if you have an emergency, the adult you care for is safe and their care needs are met by; either a nominated friend, or a family member, or an experienced care assistant, who will stay until alternative arrangements can be made.

Accessing the service is quick and easy. In an emergency during office hours, please call Adult Social Care on 01325 406111.  In an emergency out of hours, please call the Emergency Duty Team on 01642 524552.

The Duty Officer will ask you for a few details such as the name and address and information on the person you care for.  The Duty Officer will also:

Check if there are any family or friends who can assist in an emergency.

If family and friends can't be contacted, Supportive will be contacted to arrange for a care assistant to provide care / support to the person you care for.

Supportive will then make arrangements to provide the necessary care.

Please note, although initial support in a Carers emergency is provided free of charge, if an ongoing service is required, the person you care for may be required to contribute to the cost, in line with the Council's charging policy.  The Duty Officer or Social Worker will discuss this with you, should an ongoing service be required.
