Parent Carer Professionals

Hello we are Rachel McCreesh and Sara Carlton. We are Parent Carer Support and Development Workers and are funded by the Big Lottery to deliver a 5 year project to address the following issues:

  • Reducing the isolation that Parent Carers experience by developing: local groups; virtual support groups and forums as well as social activities.
  • Improving their financial capability by offering support with: benefit checks; form filling; grant applications; referring to access to debt advice agencies; and support with employment.
  • Improving thier knowledge and information of: services available; their child’s condition; and supporting them to develop any skills they identify for themselves, e.g. how to deal with challenging behaviour through providing workshops, courses and written information.
  • Supporting Parent Carers to overcome the barriers that prevent them from looking after their own physical and emotional health and wellbeing.
  • Working with Parent Carers to ensure that they are seen as the expert partner in the care of their child and are given the recognition they deserve through our working with a range of voluntary and statutory agencies.
  • Supporting them to take a break.

Currently, we have over 2,500 Parent Carers registered with us. In addition to our one-to-one work with them, we also work closely with a wide range of Voluntary and Statutory agencies. We find out more about the support they offer to families- and the criteria for accessing those services, which ensures that we make appropriate referrals. We also work in partnership with other agencies to develop groups, training and workshops and recent examples of this include North East Autism Services and Sure Start.

If you are working with families of disabled children and would like to find out more about the support they can get from our service or would like to explore some partnership working ideas, please get in touch.
