GP Surgeries

Durham County Carers Support is working closely with GP practices across the County to ensure that Carers receive support and good access to services through their local surgery. Being a Carer can often affect your own health and we are working with surgeries to ensure they are aware of your needs. Many Carers find it hard to find time to look after themselves, which can lead to problems not being dealt with early enough.

Jan Burden is the Health and Social Care Development Worker and she has identified a Carer Link in all surgeries. This is often the Practice Manager or another member of staff who has an interest in supporting Carers. They receive regular information via a bulletin from Jan and often spend time looking at how their surgery can improve the support they offer through training sessions and meetings. Surgeries often let us use their rooms to meet with Carers, hold information days or deliver Counselling sessions.

Your surgery needs to know you are caring for someone so they can offer you support. To ensure this happens please fill in one of our forms “Does your GP know you are a Carer?” which can be found in your surgery, or ask us and we will post you one out. This will ensure they understand the pressures you are under and will allow them to plan the best way to support you.
